CALL THE GOVERNOR & TELL HIM TO SUPPORT IMPORTANT CONSUMER PROTECTIONS!

We need to continue to call Governor Schwarzenegger and urge him to show his support and sign important bills implementing and improving the Federal health law here in California.

Among these important bills is SB890 (Alquist/Steinberg), which would help consumers by enabling them to make smart choices based on “apples-to-apples” comparisons between health insurance plans, while also eliminating annual or lifetime caps on coverage!

Call Governor Schwarzenegger today and urge him to stand up for these important consumer protections and sign the exchange bills and SB890!

Call 916-445-2841 to speak with the Governor’s office TODAY!

TELL GOV. SCHWARZENEGGER TO SIGN AB1602 & SB900

Earlier this month, the State legislature made history when it passed AB1602 and SB900, the flagship health reform implementation bills that would make California the first state in the nation to create a Health Insurance Exchange, a new one-stop shop where consumers can easily compare and get affordable health coverage options.

Governor Schwarzenegger has just returned from Asia, and now we have only two weeks to convince him to sign these bills into law!

Call the Governor and urge him to show his support for greater access to affordable health care by signing the laws establishing the state Health Insurance Exchange!

Call 916-445-2841 to speak with the Governor’s office TODAY!

CALL SEN. FEINSTEIN AND BOXER TODAY

And tell them to VOTE NO on the Johanns Amendment

Republicans and other health-reform opponents are trying to undermine the new national health care bill. And we need to stop them!

Senator Mike Johanns (R-NE) has proposed an amendment to the Small Business Jobs Act that attempts to undermine two core provisions of the Affordable Care Act: free preventive health care and shared responsibility!

If passed, the Johanns Amendment would steal important funding away from these two of important provisions by repealing part of the health law that requires businesses to report certain transactions as a way of improving tax collection.

That’s why it’s so important that we defeat this amendment NOW!Help us fight back against subversive Republican tactics to repeal the new health law!

Call Senator Feinstein and Senator Boxer TODAY and ask them to vote NO on the Johanns Amendment and protect crucial funding for the new health law!

CALL YOUR STATE LEGISLATORS & TELL THEM TO SUPPORT LEGISLATION ENDING UNJUST RATE HIKES!

All week long, you’ve been making calls to your State Senators and State Assemblymembers. We’ve now passed all but 2 of the most critical consumer protection and health reform State implementation bills.

Now we’ve only got 2 more to go -one in the State Senate (AB2578) and one in the State Assembly (SB1163) - that legislators will vote on in the next day or two.

Join us and pick up the phone today and Call your state legislators TODAY and urge them to SUPPORT legislation that ends Anthem Blue Cross and other insurer’s unjustified rate hikes!

———————————————————–
LET’S KEEP THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY HONEST!

Pick up the phones TODAY and call your State Assemblymember!

And ask him/her to VOTE YES on two very important consumer protection bills currently awaiting a floor vote in the State Assembly:

SB 1163 would require insurers to disclose information about how they determine rates and requires their rate filings to be actuarially sound! This legislation would also require insurance companies to notify consumers (in writing) at least 180 days prior to any rate increase or benefit change. Insurance companies would also have to disclose their reasons for any rate changes.

SB 890 would simplify the process of purchasing health coverage by categorizing insurance plans and products based on their actuarial value - allowing consumers to compare the degree of risk they take on with various plan options. This gives consumers much needed information about how much money they may end up spending out of pocket.

Click here to call YOUR State Assemblymember and urge him/her to VOTE YES on SB 1163 and SB 890 to make the insurance industry accountable to consumers!

———————————————————–

PICK UP THE PHONE & STAND UP AGAINST UNJUST RATE HIKES!

The State Senate may be voting on AB 2578 (Jones), one of several critical state implementation and consumer protection bills in the Senate, as early as TODAY.

And the private insurance industry is mounting a full-scale assault to prevent this law from passing. That’s because AB 2578 would require insurers to justify and get approval from the Department of Insurance or Department of Managed Health Care in order to raise rates, copayments and other charges.

Call your State Senator TODAY and urge him/her to VOTE YES on AB 2578 and end unjustified rate hikes!

And don’t forget to let us know how the call went!

CALL YOUR STATE SENATORS!

And urge them to VOTE YES on SB 900 and AB 1602!

On Friday one of the critical bills to implement and improve health reform in California - SB900 (Alquist/Steinberg) passed the Assembly by a vote of 49-25. This bill, alongside its companion bill AB1602 (Perez), creates a new California health insurance exchange - a central piece of the newly passed federal health law - and provides California families and small businesses new affordable access to good coverage!

SB900 is now set to go to the Senate where it will be voted on alongside AB1602 as early as today!

We know the private insurance industry - led by Anthem Blue Cross of California (the largest private insurer in the state) - is using all of its muscle and money to oppose these bills.

Click here to find your State Senator TODAY and urge him or her to vote YES on SB 900 and AB 1602!

Also, after you have called your State senator, let us know how it went by clicking the link below. You’re feedback helps us to know how we are doing!

Click here to send HCAN-California a report back on your calls to Senators!

STAND UP - STOP THE INSURANCE INDUSTRY LOBBYISTS!

High-priced insurance industry lobbyists have set their sights on Insurance Commissioners across the country in an effort to undermine the implementation of the new health care law. That’s because they know that the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) has been tasked with drafting a list of insurance industry regulations for Dept. of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius as part of the new law.

Call California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner today. Tell him you support tough regulations that make health care affordable and hold the insurance companies accountable.

Call TODAY - 1-800-927-4357

———————————————————–

TAKE A STAND AGAINST INSURANCE INDUSTRY ABUSE!

When Anthem Blue Cross didn’t think their rate hike would be reviewed, they raised rates up to 39% without bothering to check the math. Once Anthem Blue Cross’ rate hike came under public scrutiny and needed justification to regulators - thanks to you - they came back with a significantly lower rate increase.

Most recently, insurance provider Aetna withdrew proposals to raise rates as high as 19% for California consumers on the individual health insurance market only after significant mathematical errors were found!

These, and countless other examples of insurance industry abuse and errors, demonstrate the overwhelming need to introduce more regulatory oversight of the wealthy insurance industry here in California!

And we need YOUR help to do it!

Click here to sign the petition today asking State legislators to support health care implementation bills on rate regulation!

PROTECT OUR HEALTH CARE! END CORPORATE GIVEAWAYS!

Every year, California loses billions of dollars in the form of secret corporate tax breaks and loopholes - most of which are the result of a closed backroom budget deals. These in turn cost the state much-needed funds to invest in vital health care and other basic services!

But now we can take a stand against backroom budget deals and massive corporate giveaways!

That’s HCAN-California is partnering with our friends at CREDO and the Health & Human Services Network of California to stop the corporate giveaways that impact our seniors, working families and children.

Sign the petition TODAY and let our leaders know that California can’t afford any more secret corporate giveaways that ruin our vital health care infrastructure!

———————————————————–

SAVE CALIFORNIA’S HEALTH CARE!

Governor Schwarzenegger’s May Revise budget seeks to balance the budget deficit through devastating cuts to California’s vital health and human services safety net. Not only will these terrible cuts cost California hundreds of thousands of jobs, they’ll also severely limit access to care for millions of Californians, while also undermining and obstructing the implementation of the newly passed national health care reform law!

That’s why we need to call our state legislators NOW and urge them to OPPOSE the Governor’s May Revise Budget!

Click here to find your legislator and call him or her TODAY!

———————————————————–

CALL STEVE POIZNER TODAY!

Join us in calling on State Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner and California insurance regulators to investigate ALL private insurance companies’ attempts to raise our rates?

Click here to Call Steve Poizner at his Sacramento Office TODAY!

If we’ve learned anything in our health care reform work, it’s that the private insurance industry - starting with Wellpoint and its subsidiary Anthem Blue Cross here in California, CANNOT be trusted to do what’s in the best interest of consumers.

The Department’s investigation into just one set of rate hikes showed mathematical errors and double-counting. If the insurers don’t even bother to check their math, what other errors are waiting to be found?

Simply click the link above, or call 1-800-927-4357 to take action NOW!

Not only will these actions have important consequences for our efforts to implement health reform here in California, but represents an opportunity to stand together for the progressive values we all share!

———————————————————–

CALL YOUR STATE LEGISLATORS TODAY!

As we speak, Governor Schwarzenegger is proposing to undo our hard-earned victory in bringing about national health care reform. He’s trying to push forth a series of proposed budget cuts that would unravel our health care system here in California - all part of an ongoing effort to sabotage and undermine the implementation of health reform.

Today, the California Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Health will vote on $1.6 billion in proposed cuts to the Medi-Cal program.

Not only does Medi-Cal provide low-income and high-need Californians with access to the quality care they need - but it forms part of the essential health and human services safety net which serves as the foundation on which we’re working to expand coverage to millions of Californians!

That’s why we need you to call your state legislators today and ask them NOT to cut health care for those Californians who need it most!

Click here and enter your zip-code and get your legislators’ phone numbers TODAY!
